I am a single mum to a three year old daughter. Before my daughter was born, I knew she wouldn’t be attending “school” in the traditional sense. But it wasn’t until I read an article about unschooling that I understood that that was the path we were going to follow.
Having been schooled traditionally myself, and having been a “good”, “successful” student, people have expressed surprise at my dissatisfaction and disillusionment with the school system. In short, I believe the system to be overstretched, and for me it is unable to provide the educational experiences I seek for my daughter. We have been conditioned to believe that education only happens in a classroom, and that learning can only be imparted by teachers. In becoming so conditioned, we ignore our children’s innate desire to learn, their capacity to do so, and their intrinsic curiosity.
In blogging about our unschooling journey, I hope to enhance my awareness of the learning that is constantly occurring, and become better at recognising the value of what one would ordinarily not recognise as education. I am also hoping to create a record of sorts, in order to afford my daughter some reflection on her own education. Finally, I hope to engage with other parents, unschoolers, home edders, and anyone who is inspired to comment on my posts.
